How to Build a Log Archway
Downloadable PDF Guide
A Crafted Landscapes original guide based on a real project, real materials, and real site conditions.
This downloadable guide documents how we designed and built a curved log archway gateway using reclaimed timber and on-site materials. It is not a generic how-to guide. It is a practical, experience-led method developed on site and refined through professional landscaping practice.
The idea for this build came from recognising potential in an overlooked space. What was once an overgrown, unused corner of the garden leading to the back of a shed already felt private and intimate. Rather than forcing a new structure into the space, we focused on creating a simple gateway that marked a transition and enhanced what was already there.
Using a fallen tree from within the garden, along with repurposed oak and minimal steel reinforcement, the archway was designed to feel natural, timeless, and slightly mysterious. Its lowered curve encourages visitors to slow down and engage with the space, adding a sense of arrival and discovery.
The result is a sculptural log arch that provides structure, character, and a clear threshold between spaces, while celebrating natural variation in timber size, shape, and texture.
This guide explains how the archway was designed and constructed, and how you can apply the same principles to create a similar gateway within your own garden.
