Curved Chestnut Lath Fence

Downloadable PDF Guide

A Crafted Landscapes original based on a real project, real site conditions, and a completely non-standard approach to garden boundaries.

This guide documents one of our favourite projects: a sculpted, curved chestnut lath fence designed to provide privacy while remaining soft, natural, and visually engaging.

The project came from a common problem. A boundary where mature trees had been removed, opening up unwanted views between neighbouring properties. Rather than installing a standard closeboard fence, we approached the site with a different mindset and created a natural structure that responds to its setting, rises and falls where privacy is needed, and blends seamlessly into a woodland-style backdrop.

Using split chestnut laths, curved timber detailing, and natural infill, the result is a fence that feels crafted rather than constructed.

This is not a generic “how-to”. It is a detailed explanation of how we approached the design, structure, and build, and how you can adapt the same principles to your own garden, whether at full boundary scale or as a smaller feature.
